People who are permanent runners often deal with a common issue called chafing. Basically, chafing is caused by rubbing of skin on skin or fabric on the skin, which could result in to a much painful experience. But that couldn’t be a problem if you know the exact chafing occurrence spots. The precautionary measures might help you prevent raw skin, rashes, skin burns, and painful irritation, known as chafing. Following are the 4 ways to prevent chafing while walking or running.
- Lubricate Your Body Parts
Chafing occurs with the rubbing of skin or fabric to the skin itself. One of the best and easiest ways of preventing it is lubricating your skin with lubricants like Vaseline or anti chafing cream. This way the areas don’t tend to rub, but just slide past each other. These lubricants do not allow the rashes to appear due to the skin or fabric rubs against your skin. The most common chafing areas are armpits, thighs, and nipples but it’s not certain as it can occur where there’s friction. It is most probable that you won’t get a chafing problem after lubricating your skin with anti-chafing cream or any other lubricant.
- Stay Dry
Running or walking often result in sweating. These sweaty body parts rubbing each other cause itching, rashes, or even bleeding, which results in painful irritation. Another best solution to avoid it is the use of powder for absorbing moisture. Like anti-chafing creams, there exist some friction free powders as well which fight irritation and inflammation during the exercise. If you don’t have such a powder, a simple talcum powder could serve the purpose as well. Staying dry is another way to prevent rubbing resulting in chafing.
- Wear Proper Clothes
It is an understandable fact that the workouts are easier when the clothes are loose. But it is pretty hard to escape chafing with loose clothes. The snug fit clothes are the best solution for your body parts to prevent from rubbing with each other. Your upper body part requires spandex tops, compression garments, or skin-tight polypropylene for a perfect fit. Whereas, your lower body part needs to have compression shorts or bike shorts for a tight skin fit. That’s not the mere requirement. Your clothes fabric must be a sweat wicking one. Your body areas which are prone to chafing need to be covered with the clothes with flat seams or which are seamless. Avoid wearing clothes that soak your sweat and prefer clothes that evaporate your moisture. Since fabric rub could also result in chafing, therefore, it is way too important to get the right clothes on before a workout.
- Stay Hydrated
Let’s talk about one of the very natural solutions for avoiding this issue called chafing. Try using more water before, during, and after you run or walk. Drinking doesn’t stop you from sweating after a workout, but it will prevent your perspiration conversion into salt crystal. Whereas, these salt crystals are one of the reasons for chafing enhancement. Your hydration would let you perspire freely. The more you stay hydrated, the more you’re capable of preventing chafing.
The use of water during a workout, anti-chafing cream, anti-chafing powders, and skin-fit clothes could surely keep you away from chafing. But in case you feel it during your walk or run, just stop whatever you’re doing. Wash that area with soap and bandage it after applying any lubricant.
